I CAN'T NOT MAKE GAMES.
I have enough lockerspace to hold an episode of Friends.

Really, really upsetting error! "Event script referenced an item that does not exist!"
Okay, so I have a new project in rm2k3 and I can't get anywhere with it because whenever I try to playtest (or just play it) it doesn't let me get anywhere, not even the title screen, just immediately crashes with the message "Event script referenced an item that does not exist!"
I have tried a few things and I can't figure out what is causing this since I have no event script yet, just maps and a (mostly cleared out and empty) database. Does anyone have any ideas?
My rm2k3 has been working fine for five years, by the way and I don't get this problem when I try to play other games, just mine.

ABORTION: IS IT EVIL???
For all practical purposes, I personally am in the "Alright, honey, we can do WHATEVER you want..." category if, god forbid, I were to unintentionally knock a girl up. But on a moral level I don't think abortion is anything but murder unless there are some fairly extreme mitigating surfaces, i.e. rape, serious threat of death to mother or child, major birth defects, etcetera. I am super against abortion as an after the fact prophylaxis, but then again...nothing can ruin your life harder than an unwanted child. But is it okay to murder a baby just to keep it from ruining your life?
I dunno, not my call. Like I said, in life, I would definitely resort to "I will support whatever decision you make" etcetera etcetera.
Anyway, discuss.

Someone please, please, please explain liteing fx to me.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a really, really good, comprehensive (i.e. IDIOT PROOF) tutorial on how to do light maps in RPG Maker 2003?
Or if anyone is feeling extremely patient, they could even try walking me through it themselves.
Edit: Before anyone suggests it, yes of course I have tried google. This is something I cannot figure out by myself. I have been making games for seven years and completed three without ever once using the show picture event command. It's about time for me to conquer this mental block I have.
Further edit: I have also not had much luck in "Reverse engineering" games with these kinds of doodads in them.
Final edit, I promise: Also, if this is totally impossible to do without photoshop, that's also something I need to know.
This is for an excercise in atmosphere building/halloween contest entry being made in rm2k3.
Thank you.

Game Request And I Guess Discussion So This Isn't A Pointless Topic: Taut!
I am making this topic to request (ASAP!!!!) a working link to a specific RPG Maker game. If this is not the right forum for that (maybe help and requests would be a better fit) then I guess you can go ahead and move it.
Anyway, I would really really appreciate a working download link to the English version of Taut which I can't seem to find anywhere!
Oh, right. Taut is a German horror game that was recently translated into English. It has at least a demo out (released this year, I think), but I don't know if it's completed. It looks really neat! Here is the author's description of it, from its GW thread:
Description of the game, not actually a spoiler.:

TAUT
just another silent hillish game
Hello!
You may remember my game TAUT. Well I'm from germany and so on, but now there's finally a translation of the TAUT demo. And there are new scenes and locations in, too!
Special thanks to Tabris_Macbeth who translated the most of it. Well I did the rest what you'll see when you come across bad english ;)
So then, I hope you enjoy it.
Story
Taut is a horror game with elements of Silent Hill (mostly the visual presentation of the game) and the movies of David Lynch. I'd like to add the description "Drama", too, because the story is more or less realistic and human but splitted into pieces of many metaphors which are all very weird and disturbing.
The empty town has nothing to do with Silent Hill. It's just a normal town as everywhere, but (consciously) without any name. Why is the town empty? Well think about it while playing the game ;).
By the way: neither it's a Silent Hill fan project nor is it a David Lynch game ;)
"I hate this town.
Fortunatly mom and me are leaving this hell soon.
Too long we had to live here. Too much to bear and to overcome.
Why did he do this to us?
He.
And everyone keeps silent.
I know we can make it!
But...
No. Possibly I'll never see her again.
Her."
She woke up.
"How long was I sleeping?
I've got terrible headaches...
Is this my bed? My room?
Yeah.
Without all the junk it seems so different.
I'm tired."
What is reality and what is just a dream? Reality is what we feel and experience. But aren't we able to have feelings in our dreams, too? Feelings like happiness or sadness? When reality becomes unbearable, is it that wrong to wish the dream being real? But if the dream becomes unbearable?
Judith Neelley and her mother are going to leave the town. But when Judith awakes her mother isn't present. Maybe she does some errands, the little message in the living room appears so. And so she waits and tries to overcome the time somehow.
Suddenly someone breaks into the house.
And Judith gets stuck in a wave of weirdness and confusion.
Characters:
The characters in Taut are all very confusing and depressed. We have Judith, the 17 year old hero, who appears very shy and unhappy. Her aim is it to find her mother, but this will becomes more and more uninteristing to her. Then there is Maria Lumbrera, the young police officer. Not much is known about her. At the beginning she seems to have everything under control and feels in a case very responsible for Judith. But in the course of time she loses control more and more and becomes cleary overburden. Another strange character is Alvin. He is very shy and confused, doesn't talk much but as more as the others lose control, he curiously appears to take on it. Better stay away from him. Or better not? And at least there is Sophie. A young girl, maybe 10 years old, whose main interest is it to become a great ballerina and not to disappoint her mother. She is very confused in her appearence but it's possible she knows much about the things going on. Like Alvin she talks about a bad man. The Devil. Who is going to get them all. And a mysterious "he" who would control everything.
All of the characters do not like the abrupt emptyness of the town, although all of them do not seem like they'd have much to deal with other people.

Meta-features!?
Okay, this is a question that is basically me testing the field for something I'm going to do in one of my game projects, just to get that off the table.
How do you guys feel about meta-features? Are they worth including?
A "meta-feature" (my term) is like a feature in that it adds content or doodads but unlike a real feature it is not integrated into the game's code but instead requires some "extra work" from the player to solve, usually involving something (the internet, an instruction manual) outside of the game. The classic example of a meta-feature comes from old (text) adventure games where the answer to certain puzzles would be printed in the instruction booklet. Sometimes, not always, a decoder strip would be involved. (This particular trick was used sometimes as a meta-feature (to add gameplay value), sometimes as a copy protection method.) Likewise the answer could be hidden in a website you had to check, or somewhere you could e-mail, in short, nothing you could discover by playing the game.
The classic rm2k meta-feature is an early work-around (before menu-hacking or any of that nonsense) for having a New Game+ mode. Since you can't (unless I'm mistaken) use event code in rm2k to just return the hero to a title screen with a New Game+ option replacing the New Game option. How this would work is after finishing the game and watching the credits you'd be given a password that you'd have to write down and once you were done writing it down, you could press a button and the game would quit; there would be a sub-menu at the beginning of the game where that password would be required to access the special mode, whether you had the password or not.
So, I hope I've done a good job of illustrating what a meta-feature is. Something that YOU DON'T REALLY CODE, NOT REALLY, that requires the player to, however briefly, exit the game to enhance the game.
THE ONLY EXAMPLE THAT MATTERS:
The particular meta-feature I have planned is, first off, completely optional and is something that would encourage players to use an outside website to customize their characters' appearance and then import in the file to the charas folder after they rename it to $dudeman or whatever so the main protagonist who they also name and choose the class of looks like what they want as well. Basically, a prompt in the first 60 seconds of character creation that would say "do you like your character's appearance? If not, follow the following steps which include shutting down the gam to change it."
Disclaimers: Now I know this is NOT REALLY A FEATURE. Technically, you could do this kind of thing to ANY rpg maker game just to AMUSE yourself, the only difference is that my game would actively encourage it and patiently explain how within the game. While it may be THEORETICALLY POSSIBLE to code something like this using scripts or whatever, let's just assume that for now it's well, well beyond my capabilities.
So, what do you guys think about that kind of thing? Would it enhance your enjoyment of the game even if it wasn't technically coded into the game or would it annoy you by prompting you to exit the game to fiddle around with something? Likewise, please feel free to DISCUSS META-FEATURES in general. Are they a good or bad idea?
-Max
P.S. Meta-features are not a video game thing only. Anyone here who was sentient in the 90s probably remembers all those board games that came with a video tape and it was like OMG INTERACTIVE MEDIA, right?

I have a question about adding game reviews. (Sometimes I use capslock without even knowing it.)
The Add Review button does not exist for me anymore!
I hope this sounds fsmiliar...I will screenshot this if necessary.

Not to rush you guys, I know you're all busy, I'm just wondering if y'all have any idea when that podcast (you know, from Release Something) is gonna be ready?
Official Review Thread:DRAGOON LEGENDS REVIEWED
OKAY, FIRST OFF, NO PROMISES!
But, if there is something about your game, which you request, right here, for me to review, that catches my interest, I will do an SUPER DUPER in depth, entertaining, no holds barred AND REALLY INTELLIGENT review of it AND put that review up on this very website. If your game does not interest me, I will tell you up front (NOTHING PERSONAL, GUYS) so you do not get your hopes up.
Guys whose games I have already reviewed during the RELEASE A LOT event 2+ weeks ago, please don't ask me for any reviews, you already got yours, unless you're asking for a review of a different game, which is okay.
Also if there is a super-interesting or great game that you didn't make that you want me to review, I can do that too. Please focus on things I haven't played already- I have played most of the "major" games the community has produced since 2001 but I am sure there are a ton I haven't played. Obscure is good, irrelevant is bad. Capiche?
DISCLAIMER: I MAKE NO PROMISES ON PROMPTNESS OF DELIVERY OF REVIEWS OR IN FACT I MAKE NO PROMISES OF DELIVERY OF REVIEWS AT ALL. BUT I WILL TRY.
Alright, now that that has been said:

Script Database?
So, a LOT of websites (RRR, RMVX) have a forum devoted to be a database of RM(V)X(P) scripts created/submitted by users. Since we don't really have an RMVX section up and running on the site (as Holbert pointed out recently) do any of the Powers That Be think that it would be a good idea to have this kind of thing on the forums?
This is more of a suggestion than a complaint, by the way, so yeah, discuss.

Changing Parallax Backgrounds In RMVX (now in sentence case)
Does anyone know by chance if there's a way to reproduce the old "Change Parallax Background" event command in RMVX? I didn't find anything relevant with a cursory google search and as far as I can tell none of KGC's scripts cover this function.
For the record, I'm not looking for an animated parallax background script or anything that fancy, just one that will allow me to change the background image and scrolling rate.
